"Women who seek to be equal with men lack ambition."

My friend had this posted on her AIM profile.  at one angle it seems like an attack on women.  however, it can also be an empowering statement.  If you're reading this, don't hesitate for a sec and let me know what you think it means.  tell your friends too about this quote and make them post their thoughts on this site.  thanks

It means, don't settle to just be equal, strive to break more barriers.  It implies to not just stand on the Earth, shoot for the stars.  Because being equal to men means following where they've already walked.  Why not try some new untaken paths for yourself?

I'm not too familiar with Timothy Lear I know he was an advocate of psychedelics and he was pretty influential in the sixties. I think from that perspective he wouldn't be trying oppress women. When I read this quote, I think he meant to say that the ambitious women he's met have not aspired to be "just" equal with men, because they always were trying to surpass them.

if it is meant to mean women should be "better" than men that's still sexist. i want equality not that women are percieved as better

Timothy Leary is known for his sarcastic wit! This quote takes a humorous shot at men by suggesting that if women aspire only to be equal, they are setting their sights too low. They are taking a step backwards. Keep in mind this was likely said in the 60's or 70's where equality was a greater political issue than it is now.

Another Leary quote I like is...

"There are three side effects of acid: enhanced long-term memory, decreased short-term memory, and I forget the third. "

Its saying, if you're only trying to be equal to a man, you are not ambitious bc clearly women can achieve further greater than a man. Its a nice moronic feminist statement. Who gives a shit if you are a woman are a man, honestly? Both serve equally important but different roles in society. I'll never understand the point of blurring the line between equality and similarity. It really is conflation at its best!

To see if it is offensive, just change the word man/woman (Man who seek to be equal to woman have no ambition.)
I think most reputable U.S. corporations would find it offensive if it were in the workplace.
